Mechanical Seals and Shaft Alignment | 18th November 2021 | Virtual Conference

Rotating machinery (pumps, compressors, turbines, electric motors, etc) form a major part of most manufacturing and process industries (Refining, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, food and beverages, power generation, etc) and is one of the most important assets to be managed to ensure safe, reliable and profitable production. Failures on rotating machinery can have a high negative impact on production, may cause process safety risks and incidents and are also quite expensive to repair. Some of the contributors to rotating machinery failures include bearing failures, shaft failures and seal failures caused by misalignment between the driver and driven unit and various product spills and loss of containments are contributed to mechanical seal failures.

Proper alignment between drivers and driven equipment is essential to ensure minimum vibration and smooth operation of your rotating assets. Various factors can influence proper alignment such as inadequate or poor quality maintenance of equipment, aging or incorrect and lack of understanding of alignment tools and methodologies.

Mechanicals seals also form an integral part in reliable operation of rotating machinery obviously preventing loss of containment of valuable product and also hazardous or toxic fluids that can cause significant process safety incidents. It is therefore imperative to ensure that mechanical seals are correctly selected according to strict standards to fit the required application and ensure safe and reliable operation.
